1.1 Hot-Finished Seamless Pipe

Hot-finished seamless pipe is formed and sized at elevated temperature, supporting larger outside diameters and heavier wall thicknesses.

It is commonly specified for pressure piping, line pipe, structural applications, and general industrial service where close dimensional tolerances are not required.


1.2 Cold-Drawn Seamless Pipe

Cold-drawn seamless pipe is produced by drawing a seamless tube through a die at ambient temperature.

The cold-working process provides tighter dimensional control and a controlled surface condition. It can also modify mechanical properties through strain hardening, depending on the amount of reduction and subsequent heat treatment.

1.3 Cold-Rolled Seamless Pipe

Cold-rolled seamless pipe is produced by reducing a seamless tube through a cold-rolling operation. Cold pilgering is one rolling process used for seamless tube production, in which the tube is reduced over a mandrel by reciprocating grooved rolls.

The rolling process can provide close control of wall thickness, outside diameter, and surface condition.

2. Types of Seamless Carbon Steel Pipes by Application


Seamless carbon steel pipe is also specified according to its intended service. The applicable standard determines the required grade, dimensions, testing, and delivery condition for each application.


2.1 Seamless Line Pipe

Seamless line pipe is used to transport oil, natural gas, water, and other fluids under pressure. API 5L is the principal specification, with grades such as Grade B, X42, X52, X60, and X65 available for different strength requirements.


For API 5L projects, PSL1 and PSL2 define different levels of product requirements. The purchase specification may also define outside diameter, wall thickness, end finish, hydrostatic testing, impact testing, and sour-service requirements.


2.2 Seamless Boiler Pipe

Seamless boiler pipe is used in boilers, superheaters, heat exchangers, and other equipment operating at elevated temperature and pressure. Typical carbon steel specifications include ASTM A192 for high-pressure boiler tubes and ASTM A210 for boiler and superheater tubes. 2.3 Seamless Mechanical Tube

Seamless mechanical tube is supplied for shafts, sleeves, rollers, hydraulic-cylinder components, and other machined parts where dimensional accuracy and mechanical properties affect the finished component.


ASTM A519 covers carbon and alloy steel mechanical tubing, while EN 10305-1 covers cold-drawn seamless precision steel tubes. Cold-drawn material is often specified when tighter OD/ID tolerances, wall-thickness control, straightness, and surface condition are required.


2.4 Seamless Casing Pipe

Seamless casing pipe is installed in oil and gas wells to support the wellbore and isolate formation zones. API 5CT covers casing grades including J55, K55, N80, L80, and P110.


The main selection parameters are outside diameter, nominal weight, grade, connection type, and length range. Common API connections include STC, LTC, and BTC; premium connections may be specified when the well design requires higher sealing or connection performance.


2.5 Seamless Structural Pipe

Seamless structural pipe is used for columns, load-bearing members, frames, heavy machinery, and other structural components where seamless construction is specified.


EN 10210 covers hot-finished structural hollow sections, while ASTM A500 includes both welded and seamless carbon steel structural tubing. Selection focuses on mechanical load performance, steel grade, section dimensions, wall thickness, yield strength, tensile strength, straightness, and cut length.


3. How to Choose the Right Type of Seamless Carbon Steel Pipe


The pipe type should be selected according to the required size, wall thickness, dimensional tolerance, service conditions, and applicable specification.

For procurement, the manufacturing condition and application specification should be considered together. A cold-drawn pipe is not automatically preferable to a hot-finished pipe; the additional cold-working cost is justified when the required dimensional or surface requirements cannot be met by the hot-finished condition.
