Special Coated Pipes

Specially coated pipes refer to a type of pipe that is based on ductile iron pipes and applies special coating materials to its inner or outer walls to improve its anti-corrosion, wear-resistance, corrosion resistance and other properties.

Common Special Coatings: cement mortar + epoxy resin lining, epoxy ceramic lining, polyurethane inner coating.

The complex soil corrosion requires higher external corrosion resistance of pipelines.

China has a vast territory, and the corrosion of soil in different regions is relatively different. Under the premise of intensive study of typical corrosive soils across the country, ductile iron pipes have the ability to tailor different external anti-corro

sion coatings for customers, and ensure long-term safe operation of pipelines.

The basic external anti-corrosion coating that Eastern Steel Manufacturing Co.,Ltd provides is the Zinc layer, which has good anticorrosion performance in most soil environments. However, in special circumstance, the protection of Zinc layer cannot resist the erosion of strong corrosive soils, so it is necessary to protect the pipe by using polyethylene sleeve as an anti-corrosion layer or special coating. According to the soil environment of the buried pipeline, and the judgment of soil corrosive, Eastern Steel Manufacturing Co.,Ltd can help customers to design pipeline anti-corrosion scheme that meeting using requirements as well as high cost performance.

Special coating pipe for ductile iron refers to a layer of special anti-corrosion material coated on the surface of ductile iron pipe to improve its corrosion resistance, wear resistance and service life. Common special coatings include cement mortar + epoxy resin lining, epoxy ceramic lining and polyurethane inner coating.

Common special coatings

1. Cement mortar + epoxy resin lining

This coating uses two-component epoxy coating, does not contain any organic solvents, will not release any pollutants into the water body, can effectively inhibit the precipitation of alkaline substances in the cement lining, and ensure that the water quality is safer and more hygienic. Because the coating is smoother than the cement lining, it reduces the head loss during pipeline operation and saves the operating cost of the pipeline. The recommended sealing layer thickness is 100μm, which is suitable for drinking water, direct drinking water, soft water for special industrial purposes, etc.

2. Epoxy ceramic lining

Epoxy ceramic is a new type of anti-corrosion coating. The epoxy ceramic coating is cured on the cement inner wall of the cast iron pipe by mechanical spraying or manual brushing. This coating is dense and smooth, hard, seawater resistant, corrosion resistant, and has excellent electrical insulation properties. It is suitable for conveying sewage, reclaimed water, drinking water, etc. Its service life can reach more than 100 years, with a smooth surface, low friction resistance, and excellent hydraulic performance.

3. Polyurethane inner coating

The polyurethane inner coating is sprayed with a two-component, solvent-free, 100% solid polyurethane material, which has excellent anti-corrosion and wear resistance. It is suitable for water supply projects with all water qualities from soft water to hard water, such as municipal sewage and certain industrial wastewater. This coating has a smooth surface and low friction resistance, and is suitable for conveying wastewater with high solid particle content, industrial water, and surface water.

Ductile iron pipes can be divided into the following categories according to the different outer surface coatings:

1. Asphalt coated ductile iron pipes

Asphalt coating is the most common type of coating, mainly used to prevent pipelines from being corroded when used in buried or water. Asphalt coating has good corrosion resistance and water resistance, and

is suitable for water supply pipelines and drainage pipelines.

2. Ductile iron pipe with cement mortar coating

Ductile iron pipe with cement mortar coating is a pipe with a layer of cement mortar on the outer surface, which has a strong anti-corrosion effect and is particularly suitable for occasions that require higher wear resistance and corrosion resistance, such as environments that are in contact with soil or water for a long time.

3. Epoxy coated ductile iron pipe:

Epoxy coating provides excellent anti-corrosion performance, especially for underground or submarine pipelines. It has the characteristics of strong chemical resistance, good corrosion resistance, and anti-aging, and is widely used in water supply, drainage, and gas transmission systems.

4. Polyurethane coated ductile iron pipe

Polyurethane coated ductile iron pipe provides high corrosion resistance, impact resistance, and wear resistance, and is suitable for pipelines in harsh environments, especially for occasions that need to withstand large mechanical impacts.

5. Epoxy coal tar coated ductile iron pipe

This coating combines the advantages of epoxy resin and coal tar, can provide stronger corrosion resistance and weather resistance, and is often used for underground pipelines or long-distance water pipelines in humid environments.

These special coated pipes have the following advantages:

‌1. Excellent anti-corrosion performance‌

Can effectively resist various corrosive substances and extend the service life of the pipe.

2. Strong wear resistance

Suitable for high flow rate environment, reducing wear.

3. Sanitary and reliable‌

The lining is smooth, suitable for drinking water transportation, ensuring water quality safety.

4. Good environmental performance‌

Most coating materials are solvent-free and have no volatile organic compound emissions, meeting environmental protection requirements.
