Steel Casing Pipe Size Chart

Date:2025-10-30View:25Tags:steel casing pipe size, casing pipe, steel casing

Steel casing pipe is a type of pipe used to reinforce the wellbore in drilling operations. It is an OCTG pipe with a seamless steel inner lining, conforming to international or national standards such as API 5CT, ISO 11960, ASTM A53, or GB/T 9711.

During drilling, after the steel casing pipe is lowered into the wellbore to a predetermined depth, the annulus between the wellbore and the formation is filled with cement to achieve the following purposes:

Maintaining wellbore stability and preventing collapse;

Isolating different formations and preventing cross-contamination of fluids;

Providing fixed support for well completion and production equipment;

Ensuring the safety and long-term reliability of drilling and production operations.

Besides oil and gas wells, steel casing pipe is also widely used in geothermal wells, water wells, bridge foundation piles, underground tunnel reinforcement, and structural support engineering.

Steel Casing Pipe Size Representation Methods

The dimensions of steel casing pipe are mainly expressed in the following ways:

1. Metric Sizes

Using "Φ" to represent the outer diameter, such as Φ16 mm.

2. Imperial Dimensions

Expressed in inches, such as 1/2".

3. Nominal Diameter (DN)

Used to identify the standardized nominal diameter for easy matching with pipe fittings.

4. Common Conversion Formula

1 inch = 25.4 mm

For example: 1/2 inch DN15 ≈ Φ16 mm.

Steel Casing Pipe Selection Criteria

1. Application Scenarios and Well Depth

Shallow wells or water wells can use small-diameter casing pipes such as Φ16–Φ40 mm.

Deep wells or oil and gas wells should be selected according to API 5CT standards.

2. Formation Pressure and Temperature

High-pressure and high-temperature well sections should use thick-walled or high-strength steel grades (such as N80, L80, P110).

3. Corrosion Protection Requirements

In corrosive environments, alloy steel or epoxy-coated casing pipes are recommended.

4. Connection Method

Select round thread, buttress thread, or premium connection according to sealing requirements.

Steel Casing Pipe Purchase Considerations

1. Select appropriate materials, specifications, and dimensions based on the requirements and application of the steel casing pipe.

2. Inspect the appearance quality of the casing pipe to ensure there are no defects such as dents, cracks, scars, or bubbles.

3. Check if the casing pipe wall thickness meets the standard and if the manufacturer has a certificate of conformity.

4. Confirm that the length of the steel casing pipe meets the requirements and check for any cutting, bending, deformation, etc.

5. Pack and transport according to customer requirements to avoid damage and quality problems.

6. It is recommended to choose a steel casing pipe manufacturer with good after-sales service and quality assurance to ensure safe use and effectiveness.

FAQ

1. Does A Larger Steel Casing Pipe Size Result in A Higher Cost?

Yes, the cost of steel casing pipes is directly proportional to their size (outer diameter and wall thickness).

Main factors affecting cost include:

Outer diameter and wall thickness: Larger sizes and thicker walls require more steel, resulting in higher costs;

Steel grade (e.g., J55, N80, P110): Higher steel grades have higher strength and are more expensive;

Manufacturing process: Seamless pipes are more expensive than welded pipes (ERW/LSAW);

Surface treatment: Galvanizing, anti-corrosion, coating, etc., will increase additional costs.

2. What are The Suitable Applications for Large-Diameter Steel Casing Pipe?

Large-diameter steel casing pipe (e.g., 13 3/8" 20") is commonly used in:

Deep wells and high-pressure wells (oil and gas wells);

Geothermal wells;

Water wells and pumping projects;

Structural support and tunnel reinforcement.

Conclusion

As a crucial safety barrier for wellbore systems, the selection and quality of steel casing pipe directly affect the stability and lifespan of the project. Understanding standard dimensions, wall thickness parameters, and key selection points helps improve construction safety and economic efficiency. For oil and gas, geothermal, or water well projects, the appropriate selection of API standard steel casing pipe is a crucial step towards achieving efficient and safe drilling.
