3. How to Read Stainless Steel Pipe Dimensions

Stainless steel pipe dimensions are commonly specified using NPS, DN, OD, WT, and Schedule. Each term describes a different aspect of the pipe.

NPS (Nominal Pipe Size)A standard size designation used primarily in North America. It does not directly represent the measured outside diameter.
DN (Nominal Diameter)A metric designation for nominal pipe size. It is a reference value rather than an exact measurement of the pipe's internal diameter.
OD (Outside Diameter)The actual specified outside diameter of the pipe, typically expressed in millimeters or inches.
WT (Wall Thickness)The thickness of the pipe wall, which affects its internal diameter, weight, and pressure capacity.
Schedule (Sch)A designation for standardized pipe wall thickness. For the same NPS, a higher Schedule generally indicates a thicker wall and a smaller internal diameter.
When comparing pipe dimensions across different materials, the applicable standards and specifications should also be considered. For carbon steel applications, see our Carbon Steel Seamless Pipe page for product details and available specifications.

4. 304 vs 316 Stainless Steel Pipe Weight

Type 304 stainless steel has a typical density of approximately 7.93 g/cm³, while Type 316 is approximately 7.98 g/cm³. For pipes with the same dimensions, Type 316 may therefore have a slightly higher theoretical weight. Actual values vary with material composition and the density used for calculation.

5. Frequently Asked Questions

Q1. Is NPS the same as the actual outside diameter?
No. NPS is a nominal size designation, while OD is the specified outside diameter. For example, NPS 2 pipe has an OD of 60.3 mm.
Q2. What is the difference between Schedule 10S and Schedule 40S?
Schedule 40S generally has a thicker wall and greater theoretical weight than Schedule 10S of the same NPS, resulting in a smaller internal diameter.
Q3. How do you calculate stainless steel pipe weight per meter?
Use the formula: Weight (kg/m) = 0.02491 × t × (D − t), where D is the outside diameter and t is the wall thickness in millimeters. This formula assumes a density of 7.93 g/cm³.
Q4. What information is needed to order stainless steel pipes?
Specify the grade, standard, NPS or DN, outside diameter, wall thickness or Schedule, length, and quantity to help ensure the correct product is supplied.

Note: Data is for general reference. Dimensional values are based on ASME B36.19M; verify against the applicable specification before ordering. Theoretical weights assume a stainless steel density of 7.93 g/cm³ (for other grades such as Type 316, see Section 4).
