SSAW (Spiral Submerged Arc Welded) steel pipes are manufactured by forming steel strips or coils into a spiral shape and welding the spiral seam using the submerged arc welding process. They are commonly used in large-diameter water pipelines, oil and gas transportation, and steel piling projects.
SSAW steel pipe sizes run from 219.1 mm to 3,500 mm outside diameter, with wall thickness 5.6–25.4 mm and lengths up to 18 m. This page gives the size chart, the weight chart and the sizes used in each application.
| Specification | Eastern Steel Supply Range |
|---|---|
| Outside Diameter (OD) | 219.1–3500 mm |
| Wall Thickness (WT) | 6–25 mm |
| Length | 3–18 m |
| Cross-section | Circular |
The required OD, wall thickness, and length are specified according to the project requirements. Available size combinations are subject to the selected steel grade, manufacturing conditions, and applicable standard. Actual combinations depend on the steel grade, coil dimensions, spiral-forming geometry, welding capacity, and applicable product standard.
The chart below lists the outside diameters, wall thickness ranges for different API 5L steel grades, and corresponding production lengths.

Two pipes can have the same outside diameter and still need different wall thicknesses. The wall ends up being the heaviest of four requirements.
The wall has to hold the design pressure, so higher pressure means a thicker wall, and a stronger steel grade lets you go thinner at the same pressure.
A big diameter with a thin wall will dent or lose its round shape when it is lifted, stacked or buried. On large pipes this often calls for more wall than pressure alone would.
If the inside will corrode over the service life, you add extra metal to be consumed. Coating on the outside only protects the surface — it does not replace that extra metal.
A heavy wall at full length may be more than the crane can lift, so length and wall are chosen together.
The final thickness is the heaviest of the four, rounded up to what the mill actually rolls. Send us the diameter, pressure, service and transport limit, and we will confirm the wall that covers all of them.
Q1. What Is the Maximum Diameter of SSAW Steel Pipe?
Eastern Steel supplies SSAW steel pipes with outside diameters from 219.1 mm to 3,500 mm. The detailed size chart covers listed grade and wall thickness combinations up to 2,134 mm.
Q2. Are All SSAW Pipe Diameter and Wall Thickness Combinations Available?
No. Available combinations depend on pipe diameter, steel grade, and production capabilities. The required OD, WT, and grade should be confirmed together.
Q3. How Do You Calculate the Inside Diameter of an SSAW Pipe?
Subtract twice the wall thickness from the outside diameter: ID = OD − 2 × WT. For example, a pipe with a 610 mm OD and 12.7 mm WT has an ID of 584.6 mm.
