Two types of seamless mechanical tubes

Date:2021-09-03View:614Tags:Cold drawn seamless mechanical steel tube, hot rolled seamless mechanical steel tube

Seamless mechanical steel pipe is one of the most commonly used types of seamless steel pipes. The seamless steel pipe has a hollow section and no welds from beginning to end. Compared with solid steel such as round steel, seamless steel pipe has lighter weight when the bending and torsion strength is the same, and it is a kind of economical cross-section steel.

There are basically two types of seamless mechanical steel pipe:

Cold drawn seamless (CDS) and hot rolled seamless (HFS). Both CDS and HFS steel pipes have strength and durability, but the manufacturing process advantages of each type of pipe are slightly different. Deciding whether cold drawn seamless pipe or hot processed seamless pipe is best depends on how you plan to use the pipe for your application.

The cold drawn seamless mechanical tube is made of hot rolled SAE 1018 carbon steel and then stretched at room temperature. During the stretching process, the tip of the tube passes through the mold. Force is used to stretch the steel to the required thickness and shape and smooth the surface. This type of steel pipe meets the ASTM A519 standard. It offers high yield strength, close tolerances and smooth surfaces, making it the first choice for many mechanical applications.

Advantages of cold drawn seamless (CDS):

Good surface finish-excellent machinability-increased dimensional tolerance-high strength-to-weight ratio

The heat-treated seamless mechanical tube is produced using SEA 1026 carbon steel and manufactured using the same extrusion process, but there is no final step of drawing the tube at room temperature. Steel pipes produced by the HFS process are easy to process and are ideal for applications that do not require strict dimensional tolerances or smooth surface finish. HFS steel pipe meets the ASTM A519 standard and is usually used in applications that require thicker and heavier walls.

Advantages of thermally processed seamless (HFS):

Cost-effective material-good processability-wide size range

Cold drawn seamless and hot-finished seamless mechanical steel pipes manufactured by ASTM A519 are available in a variety of configurations.
