Seamless refers to the pipe's manufacturing construction, while black steel generally refers to an uncoated or non-galvanized steel pipe with a characteristic dark surface. A pipe can therefore be both seamless and black steel.

Seamless carbon steel pipe is produced by piercing and forming a solid steel billet, followed by rolling or sizing. It has no longitudinal weld seam or weld heat-affected zone (HAZ).
Black steel pipe is generally supplied without galvanizing or a protective coating and can be manufactured as either welded or seamless. Its dark appearance is typically associated with mill scale or oxide on the surface.
Black steel pipe is normally supplied without galvanizing or a protective coating. For outdoor, underground or corrosive service, coatings such as FBE, 3LPE or HDG may be specified.
Seamless carbon steel pipe can also be supplied bare, oiled or coated depending on the service.
